Discretionary Portfolio Management

Discretionary Portfolio Management in Newmarket, Ontario

Discretionary portfolio management means a registered Portfolio Manager makes the day-to-day investment decisions in your accounts on your behalf, within a written mandate you approve. You set the objectives, the time horizon, and the tolerance for risk. We do the ongoing work of managing the portfolio to that mandate — without calling you before every trade.

TK Dale Wealth Management Inc. is registered as a Portfolio Manager with the Ontario Securities Commission, serving families and business owners across Newmarket, York Region, and the GTA.

The service

What discretionary portfolio management is.

Discretionary management is a specific, regulated relationship. Under it, you grant the firm written authority to buy and sell investments in your accounts according to an agreed mandate — documented as an Investment Policy Statement. Every decision must fit that mandate. Nothing about the arrangement is casual: the authority, the constraints, and the responsibilities are all in writing before a single trade is made.

The practical effect is simple. Markets do not wait for phone tag. When a decision needs to be made, it gets made — inside the boundaries you set, by someone accountable for making it.

Two models

How it differs from an advice-based account.

Advice-based account

The advisor recommends. You approve each trade.

The decision — and the timing — rests with you. This model suits people who want to make each call themselves.

Discretionary account

Decisions rest with the Portfolio Manager.

Governed by your written mandate. This model suits people who want professional decisions made consistently, without their own schedule — or their own emotions in a falling market — becoming the bottleneck.

Neither model is universally better. The registration categories, obligations, and titles involved differ across Canada’s regulatory framework — a distinction worth understanding before you choose.

Who it suits

Fit is about complexity, not account size.

We don’t frame fit by assets. We frame it by the complexity of your situation and by what you want your role to be. Discretionary management tends to suit:

Pre-retirees and retirees

The decade around retirement is where mistakes cost the most — sequence-of-returns risk, RRIF timing, drawing income from the right accounts in the right order. A managed portfolio keeps those decisions structured when they matter most.

Executives and high earners

Demanding careers leave no time for portfolio administration, and stock compensation can quietly concentrate risk. Discretion means the work happens whether or not your calendar allows it.

Business owners and incorporated professionals

Corporate accounts, holding companies, and personal accounts managed as one coordinated whole — with the tax and structure questions that come with them.

Families managing meaningful wealth

Multiple accounts, multiple goals, sometimes multiple generations — under one written mandate and one accountable decision-maker.

If you’d rather approve every trade yourself, a discretionary account is the wrong tool, and we’ll tell you so.

The relationship

How the relationship works.

1

Your mandate governs

Everything starts with a direct conversation about your situation, goals, and constraints. From that, we build a written mandate: your objectives, time horizon, and tolerance for risk. You approve it before anything is invested. Every subsequent decision is made within it. Decisions follow process — not headlines, and not moods.

2

Independent custody

Your assets are held in your name at an independent third-party custodian. We direct the investments; the custodian holds the assets. You can see what you own at any time through your client login. We never take possession of your money.

3

Ongoing management, reporting, and review

Portfolios are managed continuously, not revisited annually. You receive regular reporting on holdings, activity, and fees, and we meet to review whether the mandate still fits your life — because mandates should change when your circumstances do, not when markets make noise. When markets fall, you’ll get an honest read on where things stand — not a soothing script.

Discretionary managers owe clients a demanding standard of conduct — dealing with you fairly, honestly, and in good faith. You’ll know what you own, why you own it, and what it costs.

Straight terms

What we will tell you — and what we won’t.

We will tell you that all investing involves risk, including the possible loss of capital. We will tell you before markets fall that markets fall — clear expectations are the foundation of a relationship that lasts decades. We will tell you what everything costs, in plain language.

We won’t promise returns. We won’t claim certainty about markets. And if discretionary management isn’t the right fit for you, we’ll say so and point you in a better direction.

Questions, answered directly

Frequently asked questions.

What is discretionary portfolio management?

Discretionary portfolio management is an arrangement where a registered Portfolio Manager makes investment decisions in your accounts on your behalf, within a written mandate you approve. You set the objectives and constraints; the manager executes within them and is accountable for doing so.

Do I lose control of my money?

No. You approve the written mandate that governs every decision, your assets stay in your name at an independent custodian, and you can see your accounts at any time. What you delegate is the trade-by-trade decision-making — not ownership, and not oversight.

How is a Portfolio Manager different from a financial advisor?

“Portfolio Manager” is a registration category under Canadian securities law with specific proficiency and conduct requirements, permitted to manage client accounts on a discretionary basis. “Financial advisor” is not a registration category — in Ontario it is a protected title under FSRA’s title-protection framework, and individuals across many different registration categories can use it, provided they hold an approved credential. The title tells you who may use the words; the registration category tells you what the person is actually permitted to do.

Who holds my investments?

An independent third-party custodian holds your assets in your name. TK Dale Wealth Management Inc. directs the investments but never takes possession of your money.

Is there a minimum to work with TK Dale Wealth?

There’s no published minimum. Our goal is to help everyday Canadians reach their goals — fit is about the complexity of your situation and whether discretionary management is the right tool for it, which is exactly what an intro call is for.

How do fees work?

Fees are transparent and explained in plain language before you commit to anything — excellent service, for a reasonable price. The intro call covers costs directly, with nothing left vague.

Do you work with clients outside Ontario?
